Aha, the Ahr!
Germany's northern red wine paradise
13 March 2018
Werner Elflein
Image: Deutsches WeininstitutIn German, the interjection Aha! stands for a sudden insight or realisation. But Aha is also a Celtic word from which the name of the river Ahr is derived. It means as much as water. Aha, the Ahr! therefore seemed to us to be a fitting title for our themed tasting in two respects, because the past year, which was for us dominated by the Pinot Noirs and Pinot Noirs Précoces (locally known as Frühburgunder) from Germany's small red wine paradise, gave us plenty of deep insights and findings.
As in previous tastings, our results do not correspond to the simple black-and-white picture of the wine world painted by mainstream wine critics, who categorise wineries according to supposedly better and worse ones. The resulting exaggeration of an elite of winegrowers chosen for opportunistic and often economic reasons does not do justice to reality. Weinfreaks.de therefore refrains from any form of classification of wineries and focuses exclusively on the essentials – on the wines that stand before us on the table.
This is not to deny that some winemakers regularly produce better wines than others. This is just as much in the nature of things as the fact that there are always wineries that outgrow themselves in some years or do not excel equally in all wine disciplines. However, the ratings of the relevant wine magazines and wine guides hardly reflect this fact, or only inadequately. A large number of remarkable and outstanding wines that deserve to be appreciated thus regularly fall through the cracks.
For Aha, the Ahr! we tasted over 150 wines. As a rule, we had two bottles of each wine which we subjected to a total of four individual tests. Two of these tests were carried out as a blind tasting.
From the Middle Ages to the Present
Whether viticulture in the Ahr valley dates back to the time of the Roman occupation is highly questionable. The circumstantial evidence speaks rather against it. Archaeologists have not been able to find any remains of Roman wine presses in the Ahr region. The first references to vineyards “ad aram” in historical sources date back to the year 770. In 893, the first concrete documentary evidence of vineyards on the Ahr is found in the Prüm Urbar, the property register of Prüm Abbey. Among others, the present-day villages of Ahrweiler, Walporzheim, Dernau and Altenahr are listed.
Red grape varieties have only been native to the Ahr since the time after the Thirty Years' War. Until well into modern times, however, it was customary to process them into rosé wines known as Ahrbleichert.
In the 19th century, a severe economic crisis caused by a series of weak harvests and sales problems led to mass emigration and, in 1868, to the founding of the world's first winegrowers' cooperative in Mayschoß. The former Winzer-Verein zu Mayschoß now trades as Winzergenossenschaft Mayschoß-Altenahr.
Until the 1980s, the Ahr was dominated by pale-coloured, thin and sweet red wines, which had almost nothing in common with today's ideal of a Pinot Noir and found their friends mainly among the less demanding weekenders from the nearby big cities.
The opportunity for a qualitative evolution arose in the 1970s through large-scale land consolidation, in the course of which Pinot Noir displaced the then leading Portugieser as the leading grape variety. As a result, several producers did great pioneering work. They travelled to France and tried to adapt the cultivation methods used in Burgundy for Pinot Noir at the Ahr. However, this proved to be a difficult undertaking. It took years for the apprenticeship to bear fruit. Today, the Ahr plays in the concert of the great German Pinot Noirs and quite a few wines even have the potential to succeed on the international stage. At the same time, they still have the apparent stigma of not tasting at all Burgundian, despite all their class. But anyone who expects this ignores the fact that the steep slopes of the Ahr valley, mostly dominated by slate and greywacke, offer geologically and climatically completely different conditions for winegrowing than the gentle hilly landscape of Burgundy, which is characterised by Jurassic limestone and marl.
Ahr Pinot Noirs often appear darker-fruited and warmer than their counterparts from other wine-growing regions, but by no means always. In terms of elegance, however, they are in no way inferior. The Ahr impresses with a stylistic diversity that is greater nowhere else in the country.
Another prejudice that still clings to the red wines of the Ahr is their alleged lack of ageing potential. In fact, in the 1990s – as elsewhere in Germany – there were a number of highly praised Pinot Noirs that could not live up to the expectations placed in them in the long run. But anyone who opens a red Ahr Pinot aged in the bottle for over ten years will usually be amazed at its positive development today.
The single vineyards
The Ahr is blessed with an abundance of great individual vineyards like hardly any other German wine-growing region. Differences between steep and gliding slopes are not nearly as pronounced as on the Moselle. Thus, the steep and steepest vineyards line the valley on both sides of the river like a string of pearls. But even in the few flat vineyards, such as the Walporzheim Himmelchen, remarkable wines are produced.
Image: Deutsches WeininstitutBut let us follow the course of the Ahr. In Altenahr, we first come across the Übigberg, a conglomerate of six different vineyard sites that extends into the districts of Kreuzberg and Pützfeld. Of the originally designated 32 hectares, however, only one hectare is still planted with vines. With the steeply rising Eck, which is exposed to the south and named after the former Ekka castle, Altenahr has one of the absolute top vineyards in the area. The soil varies between greywacke and Devonian slate (in the lower area), on the Reimerzhoven side loess and loess loam can also be found.
Image: PixabayIn Mayschoß, the terraced Laacherberg with its weathered slate soils initially impresses with its visual appearance. It is a vineyard that rarely appears on wine labels. Thus, the 2015 Pinot Noir from Josten & Klein was the only representative of the Laacherberg in our tasting. The Mayschoß Mönchberg, which was enlarged to more than 60 hectares in the reorganisation of German wine law in 1971 and the subsequent land consolidation, and which fills almost the entire valley basin, is much more heterogeneous in terms of its exposure. Nevertheless, its best plots are among the Ahr's fillet pieces. The Mönchberg is primarily made up of weathered slate soils, partly with loamy layers at the foot. The Mayschoß Burgberg got its name from the ruins of the Saffenburg castle. The core site above the railway line, which was only completely restored a few years ago and is dominated by basalt rock, can only be cultivated sensibly thanks to the monorack tracks due to its steep terraces. However, there are also less steep areas behind the Mayschoß railway station. In addition, the Burgberg today still includes the former single vineyards Lochmühlerley and Silberberg.
In Rech, the imposing Herrenberg towers over the village. Here, there are still many old vineyards of rootless Pinot Noir vines in traditional single-pile cultivation. Due to its favourable south/southeast exposure, the Herrenberg is one of the best vineyards at the Ahr. The soil composition varies between greywacke and weathered slate, partly also loess and loess loam. While the Blume (alluvial and terrace gravel) summarises the less favoured vineyards of the village, the Hardtberg deserves a somewhat more differentiated view. The sloping to steep and not everywhere land reformed site faces southwest/west and therefore benefits from evening sunlight. The four still cultivated hectares on slate soil are shared by Pinot Noir and Riesling.
Image: weinfreaks.deOur next stop, Dernau, has five individual vineyards. The sloping, but climatically disadvantaged Burggarten can be cultivated well by machine, but is susceptible to late frosts. In the valley that opens up, the southwest to east exposed Schieferlay, which is primarily made up of greywacke and hanging loam, follows. The lower part of the adjoining hill is home to the south-facing Pfarrwingert, one of the best single vineyards in the Ahr valley. The soil is stony and consists of Devonian slate and greywacke. Above the Pfarrwingert lies the Hardtberg, which is also open to the south, and the parts of the site that extend towards Marienthal turn to the southeast. On the other side of the river is the often underestimated Goldkaul. The Goldkaul has a very heterogeneous soil composition with a high proportion of slate. The individual parts of the site are exposed in different directions from south to west. Where the plots are not “protected from the sun”, the Goldkaul can keep up with the top vineyards, and must even be mentioned in the same breath as them. In addition, there are still some very old vines in the Goldkaul.
Image: PixabayAs a so-called weiler, Marienthal belongs partly to the municipality of Dernau, partly to the town of Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler. The Marienthal Klostergarten (not to be confused with the Großlage of the Ahr, the Klosterberg) was until about 15 years ago the monopole of the former state wine domain and mainly used for experimental cultivation. After the privatization, the new owners have replanted the Klostergarten as well as the neighboring Stiftsberg to a large extent.
Image: Deutsches WeininstitutThe Trotzenberg, which is visible as a concave mirror and owes its name to an earlier fortress for securing the border (trutzburg), has only recently gained considerable importance. Whereas the Trotzenberg used to be considered a location of little note, the perception here has changed significantly in recent years. In fact, the Trotzenberg, which is characterized by weathered greywacke soils, has a favored microclimate, especially where the concave is oriented toward the south. Some of the best Pinot Noirs in our tasting came from the Trotzenberg. Up to the Bunte Kuh, a rock that marks the border to Walporzheim, the Jesuitengarten runs along a narrow valley. Above the Jesuitengarten, on a high plateau, lies the Rosenberg, predestined for the cultivation of Pinot Noir Précoce, where the soils consist of Tertiary and Quaternary sandstone decomposite and sandstone loam.
We reach Walporzheim and here we first come across the former Domlay – the name refers to church property in the past – with its monumental dry stone walls. However, the site also included individual vineyards on the other side of the river. In 2017, the Domlay was dissolved and partly added to the Himmelchen, partly to the Alte Lay. In the area of steep vineyard terraces, the Alte Lay and the Kräuterberg – interrupted in its course by the Gärkammer – are among the best sites in the area. Several of the best wines of our tasting came from the Kräuterberg, which, in addition to the greywacke, also has portions of slate. If the Pinot Noirs from the very hot and dry site used to seem quite overripe and even ponderous in the past, they now have an overwhelming density and depth, which no longer contradicts the elegance, when the grapes are harvested earlier.
Image: Deutsches WeininstitutThe Pfaffenberg, located on the high plateau with higher clay but also stony parts, is an ideal location for the Pinot Noir Précoce, which prefers a relatively cool microclimate. In earlier times, the Himmelchen was a highly esteemed site, which the writer Gottfried Kinkel already described favorably in the 19th century. However, his remarks referred to the former Himmelchen, which was at that time still on the steep slope above the winegrowers' association. Today, the name essentially stands for a flat site in the valley, whose soils consist of sloping loam and terrace gravel, but which nevertheless produces remarkable, finely fruity Pinot Noirs.
The Walporzheim Kräuterberg is followed by the steeply terraced Ahrweiler Silberberg. Next to it is probably Ahrweiler's best site, the Rosenthal. Within the Rosenthal, the soils vary greatly, the previously predominant greywacke changing in part to a loamy stony soil, in part to loess and loess loam. It is also loess that primarily characterizes the Forstberg and the Daubhaus, where the ridge increasingly changes into a gentle slope. On the other side of the valley is the Ursulinengarten, which surrounds the Calvarienberg monastery, extended in 2017 to include the former Riegelfeld. The Ursulinengarten is dominated by greywacke and loess, but volcanic basalt can also be found. The site is home to about ten percent Pinot Noir Précoce.
Image: Deutsches WeininstitutAfter the Josef Koll winery in Bachem ceased operations a few years ago, there is regrettably no longer a preservation grower of Pinot Noir Précoce in the Ahr. Winemaker Herbert Koll always had this variety particularly close to his heart. With the west to northwest facing Karlskopf, Bachem possesses the Pinot Noir Précoce vineyard of the Ahr par excellence. In addition to the Karlskopf, the district of the town of Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler also has the Sonnenschein and Steinkaul vineyards, which are located in a side valley and traditionally also home of Pinot Noir Précoce.
The three sites of Kirchtürmchen, Schieferley and Sonnenberg are located in the Bad Neuenahr area. The soils alternate between greywacke, loam and loess; only in the Kirchtürmchen are noteworthy proportions of slate. Although the Kirchtürmchen, which is hidden in a side valley, also enjoys great popularity, the Sonnenberg in particular must be emphasized as one of the best vineyards of the Ahr. Due to the southern orientation and the warm winds that flow into the valley over the mountain ridge in some places during certain weather conditions, very full-bodied Pinot Noirs are produced here.
Image: PixabayIn the Heppingen Berg we find greywacke and greywacke slate, in the Heimersheim Burggarten, which is closer to Heppingen than to Heimersheim, basalt predominates in the upper part. The basalt is also part of the soils in the Heimersheim Landskrone, which marks the end of viticulture on the northern bank of the Ahr. Not to be forgotten is the Kapellenberg, which lies sloping on the southern bank above Ehlingen. In the Kapellenberg, which is favored by the evening sun, we find slate, sporadically also hanging loam and loess.
Pinot Noir Précoce (Frühburgunder) – a loser of climate change?
Pinot Noir Précoce is a descendant of the Pinot Noir. Whether it is a mutation or a crossing of Pinot Noir with a still unknown second grape variety has not yet been conclusively clarified. The advantages of the Pinot Noir Précoce lie in its small berry size and its low susceptibility to botrytis due to its early ripeness. Due to the better ratio of berry skin to juice compared to Pinot Noir, Pinot Noir Précoce is predestined for concentrated red wines that nevertheless have the elegance and delicacy of the mother grape. The flavour profile typically shows darker aromas than Pinot Noir, especially blueberry, blackberry, cassis and sweet black cherry.
Image: PixabayDue to climate change and the resulting shift in the vegetation period, however, Pinot Noir Précoce is increasingly ripening at a time when bird and insect predation is to be expected. In some years, there is also a particular danger from the cherry vinegar fly. Because Pinot Noir Précoce tends to have unstable yields per se, it is often not profitable. In view of the risks listed above, total losses are quite possible in some years.
To declare the Pinot Noir Précoce a “loser of climate change”, as is already being done more or less blatantly in some media, seems to us to be a little too hasty.
In the Ahr region, the strategy of planting Pinot Noir Précoce in the cool sites in order to prolong the ripening process by a few weeks and thus promote the development of more complex aromas has always been widespread. In the past, this was always logistically advantageous, because Pinot Noir Précoce could be harvested at the same time as Pinot Noir. This calculation, however, has been less and less successful for years, as even in the cool vineyards, ripening can no longer be delayed far enough. In 2017, the harvest in the Pinot Noir Précoce vineyards usually took place as early as mid to late August.
There is no question that Pinot Noir Précoce has no future in the warm, south-facing sites. But it probably never had one. When a renowned vintner is quoted in relevant reports on the subject that he has capitulated on Pinot Noir Précoce and grubbed up his south-facing vineyard, this fact does not provide a conclusive argument for questioning the grape variety in principle. In addition to the choice of location, the clone also plays a key role. The qualitatively controversial Heilbronn clone, which is by no means unknown at the Ahr, is considered by experts to be an “earlier” Pinot Noir rather than a typical Pinot Noir Précoce. There is no doubt that vine breeding is faced with the challenge of selecting clones that ripen as late as possible.
If cool (possibly also currently fallow) areas are consistently chosen for the site selection and the right clones are available, Pinot Noir Précoce has a future (for the time being) even in times of climate change. However, the cultivation of this wonderful grape variety will hardly become easier in times of constantly changing climatic conditions. But we are confident that the winegrowers of the Ahr will find the right answers to the challenges posed by Pinot Noir Précoce.
Our conclusion
The good news right from the start: we were thrilled by the red wines from the Ahr Valley. Especially with the Pinot Noirs and Pinot Noirs Précoces, we hardly tasted any weak wines. We also came across a great stylistic diversity and a high performance density among the producers. A whole series of winemakers, who are otherwise rarely in the limelight, caught our eye with excellent wines. Among them were also the two large winegrowers' cooperatives, which many critics unjustifiably treat with prejudice in open tastings.
In our opinion, Portugieser should not be underestimated, provided it comes from old vines and remains limited in yield. The white wines, which were treated like stepchildren for a long time, are now reaching a good level, as far as we have tasted them. However, we still see room for improvement in the Blanc de Noirs, which are apparently very popular with tourists from the big cities in the region.
Once again, we found the number of wines influenced by cork to be alarming. As was already the case at our last year's tasting Mosella patria vini sicci, this time too it was confirmed that the quality of natural corks is currently, after a few years of apparent relaxation, again in sharp decline.
Vintages on the Ahr
As expected, the young red wines of the 2016 vintage still need time, but in the final spurt of our tasting they provided several aha experiences. They present themselves as elegant and fruity and should have a similarly great future as the 2015s.
2015 is considered a candidate for a vintage of the century. But will it be enough for that one day in retrospect?
In contrast, we classify 2014 as an extremely difficult, sub-mediocre year that showed even the best vintners of the Ahr valley their limits in an almost brutal way. Many wines seem disjointed, inharmonious and anything but coherent. Despite the adverse conditions, some 2014s nevertheless convinced us. However, they do not come close to the best 2015s or 2013s.
On the Ahr, 2013 is almost as outstanding as 2015. The red wines have a firm acid structure and excellent depth. They are now accessible, but should mature for a few more years.
We would like to put a few question marks behind the once almost euphorically celebrated 2012 vintage. The wines are by no means disappointing, but some of them seem a little dull. Is there a phase of closure behind this phenomenon?
While 2011 was certainly not a year for white wines, the best reds can play right at the top. In our opinion, quite a few still have a great future ahead of them.

| 🯅 | The rating of the wine is based on a single taster. The taster is named in the context of the rating. The tasting was either open or blind. In case of a blind tasting, it is explicitly labelled as such. |
| 🯅🯅 | The rating of the wine is based on two tasters. The tasters are named in the context of the rating. The tasting was carried out according to the four-eyes principle, in which both tasters agree on a joint rating. |
| 🯅🯅🯅 | The rating is based on a tasting by our jury and indicates the Mean value calculated by us from the individual ratings of the tasters. Our mean value is based on the median. |
| ⚖ | The wine was evaluated in a blind tasting. We have strict rules for blind tastings. The tasters do not receive any information that would allow them to identify the wines. The tasters are only given access to further information that goes beyond the subject matter if it is absolutely necessary for understanding the wines. |
| 🕓 | We only had limited time to taste the wine - typically during an open tasting event, such as a wine fair. It was therefore not possible to observe the development of the wine in the glass over a longer period of time. The informative value of our rating may therefore be limited under certain circumstances. |
| ⛬ | The wine was tasted as a barrel sample or before an official test number (Amtliche Prüfungsnummer or Staatliche Prüfnummer) was issued. We only accept samples of unfilled wines in exceptional cases, and then only if we can assume sufficient stability in the bottle for a period of at least three months. |
| ▲ | During our tasting, the wine showed conspicuous sensory characteristics. This does not necessarily have to be a wine fault. We categorise the quality and quantity of the abnormality and include it in the rating. Wine faults such as cork taint or an atypical ageing generally lead to a complete rejection. |
| Tastings that refer to the same bottle of a wine are visually summarised by a dotted line. |
