About weinfreaks.deWhat we stand forOur values and idealsWine portals are a dime a dozen on the internet. But none can look back on a similar history as weinfreaks.de. Since 2001, for more than 20 years, we have stood for independent, critical and incorruptible wine criticism. For us, only the quality in the glass counts. Wine lovers therefore appreciate weinfreaks.de as a reliable guide and decision-making aid when buying wine. Wine makers always receive honest and constructive feedback from us. This creates an environment of trust from which all sides benefit.About weinfreaks.deHow we tasteBlind to prejudicesWine tastings at weinfreaks.de serve to assess the quality of wine. For this purpose, we describe and evaluate the colour, smell and taste of a wine. Colour faults are rare, special importance is attached to the smell and taste. >Due to developments in the wine world, the criteria for wine ratings are subject to constant change. Influences from the natural wine scene are also expanding the traditional understanding of wine and lead to an acceptance of flavours that are – often without objective – reason still associated with faults in conservative wine sensory.About weinfreaks.deObjective vs. subjectiveOur point of viewAn artisanal cultural asset such as wine cannot be measured exactly, but in principle opens up scope for interpretation. Therefore, it cannot be assumed that different tasters will evaluate each wine in the same way. Despite all objectivity, a certain degree of subjectivity cannot be ruled out. Nevertheless, this in no way justifies judging a wine from the outset solely according to one's own taste with reference to the subjective evaluation component. At weinfreaks.de, we taste according to the motto “As objectively as possible, as subjectively as necessary”.About weinfreaks.deHow we rateOur 20-point scaleIn order to avoid comparisons with the corrupted “Parker points” we have opted for the 20-point scale that used to be widely used in Europe. The scale corresponds in its interpretation to France's school grading system, which we extend by awarding half points. Because we make full use of the range of values between 10 and 20 points, our scale achieves a similar granularity.About weinfreaks.deOur mean valueThe ratings of the juryIn jury tastings, the challenge is to bundle the ratings of the individual tasters into a mean value. The arithmetic mean proves to be insufficiently robust against outliers and leads to strong levelling effects, especially at the top of the rating scale. At weinfreaks.de we therefore use a special mean value developed by us based on the median. We will explain to you with examples how we form it.About weinfreaks.deOur teamJury members wantedAn above-average knowledge of wine and experience with tasting wine are important prerequisites for participation in a jury tasting. In addition, the ability to work as a team player in a group of tasters and to implement the specifications of the tasting manager with regard to the quality criteria and the guidelines for awarding points. Do you meet these requirements? If you would like to join weinfreaks.de as a taster, please contact us.About weinfreaks.deOur guestsVisitors from the wine worldAn intensive exchange of opinions with experts from the wine scene is of great importance to us. Our jury tastings are therefore open events to which we gladly welcome personalities from the world of wine as guests. In particular, we would like to contribute to a better mutual understanding between critics and winemakers.About weinfreaks.deOur historyMore than 20 eventful yearsTogether with Christian Segers († 2018), Werner Elflein founded weinfreaks.de in the summer of 2001 and refined the original concept. In 2010, he established blind tastings according to today's standards. Since then, he has continued to enhance the tasting methodology step by step, partly through his own insights, partly through constructive suggestions for improvement from wine friends and from the winegrowing community.
