Tasted on 28 October 2025 by Werner Elflein

Unexpectedly opaque black-red for a Pinot, probably due to the hot year and ripe grapes. Concentrated aroma of dark berries with balsamic notes. Pinot Noir in “Gothic style”. Very dense on the palate. Spicy fruit. Sandy tannins, some of which resemble Domori chocolate. Excellent length.

A deep, opaque cherry red with a lighter rim. Still somewhat reductive on the nose. Despite the overall coolness of the fruit, there are also distinctly warming nuances. Light and dark fruit aromas, primarily raspberry and sweet cherry, blend together elegantly. On the palate, too, the Dernauer cannot decide which way to go, impressively bridging the gap between the power of the hot vintage and the silky elegance of the Ahr. Distinct toasty aromas, herbaceous spice and a hint of cocoa powder and dark chocolate. Velvety, slightly grainy tannins that have now integrated well. Fine acidity. Outstanding length and persistence.

The Marienthal Trotzenberg is not one of the warmest locations on the Ahr, as it faces mainly southwest and west. Nevertheless – or perhaps because of this – it is becoming increasingly important in times of climate change. Many of the most exciting Ahr Pinot Noirs of the past decade come from the Trotzenberg. Julia Bertram's 2015 vintage is, in a sense, the antithesis of the mainstream wines that predictably find themselves at the top of the paper-based wine guide's rankings every year. Vinified according to a standard recipe that guarantees high ratings but does not reward individuality. That is why it is important to us not only to taste wines when they are young, but also to follow their development over the years. Wines that have real greatness gain in the process, while overrated blends stand out as such. Julia Bertram's Trotzenberg was perhaps a little defiant in its youth and did not necessarily reveal itself from the outset. At this time, we therefore preferred its counterpart from the Mayschoß Mönchberg. As it turns out today, this was unjustified. Because now, ten years on, we have to admit, using an analogy from football, that the Trotzenberg turned the game around in the second half. Both wines have developed exceptionally well and, despite their differences due to their different origins, are among the most impressive Pinot Noirs of the vintage in Germany. Opaque and dark red in the glass, with lightening at the rim, the nose already shows great depth. It is not raspberry or sour cherry that dominates the bouquet, but notes of green tea. Only then do cool fruit aromas emerge, most reminiscent of cranberries. With the nose slightly away from the rim of the glass, sweet nuances become apparent, now reminiscent of cranberry jelly. In the mouth, the actual theme of the wine continues. This is: cool climate perfection. The alcohol is moderately balanced, and the palate reveals great elegance and finesse. Cool, slightly tart fruit. Mineral depth, green herbal spice and green tea again meet a texture of cocoa and chocolate. Partly coarse-grained, partly fine-grained, consistently ultra-fine tannins. Fortunately, we search in vain for the typical and striking roasted aromas of the mainstream. Vital acidity, impressive freshness, extremely long finish. A Pinot Noir could hardly be closer to its terroir.

Bright, transparent garnet red with discreet cloudiness. Multi-layered scent of cassis and sour cherry with ethereal components. Elegant, delicate and finely fruity on the tongue. The potentially somewhat edgy tannins of the 2014 vintage are surprisingly harmonious and very well integrated. Fresh, exciting acidity. Discreet chocolate note on the finish. Excellent length.

Light garnet with discreet cloudiness. In addition to juicy sour cherry, there are unfortunately also hints of the vintage's tannins present on the palate, quite in contrast to its counterpart from the Ahrweiler Daubhaus. No aeration helps here, even the Ovarius decanter can only marginally improve the situation. Nevertheless, the wine clearly has enough substance to do respectably well, even if it seems somewhat monolithic. The acidity is well balanced and integrated. Good length.

🯅The rating of the wine is based on a single taster. The taster is named in the context of the rating. The tasting was either open or blind. In case of a blind tasting, it is explicitly labelled as such.
🯅🯅The rating of the wine is based on two tasters. The tasters are named in the context of the rating. The tasting was carried out according to the four-eyes principle, in which both tasters agree on a joint rating.
🯅🯅🯅The rating is based on a tasting by our jury and indicates the Mean value calculated by us from the individual ratings of the tasters. Our mean value is based on the median.
The wine was evaluated in a blind tasting. We have strict rules for blind tastings. The tasters do not receive any information that would allow them to identify the wines. The tasters are only given access to further information that goes beyond the subject matter if it is absolutely necessary for understanding the wines.
🕓We only had limited time to taste the wine  - typically during an open tasting event, such as a wine fair. It was therefore not possible to observe the development of the wine in the glass over a longer period of time. The informative value of our rating may therefore be limited under certain circumstances.
The wine was tasted as a barrel sample or before an official test number (Amtliche Prüfungsnummer or Staatliche Prüfnummer) was issued. We only accept samples of unfilled wines in exceptional cases, and then only if we can assume sufficient stability in the bottle for a period of at least three months.
During our tasting, the wine showed conspicuous sensory characteristics. This does not necessarily have to be a wine fault. We categorise the quality and quantity of the abnormality and include it in the rating. Wine faults such as cork taint or an atypical ageing generally lead to a complete rejection.
Tastings that refer to the same bottle of a wine are visually summarised by a dotted line.
