In 1982, Martin Winterling, originally from Franconia, produced his first sparkling wine, at that time still in his father-in-law's cellar. From these beginnings, a sparkling wine estate covering a total of 12 hectares of vineyards was established in Niederkirchen in the Palatinate. The family also produces still wines on the side. However, the focus is on the production of handcrafted sparkling wines typical of the region, which even meet the stricter production regulations for crémants than those for sparkling wine.

Martin Winterling's crémants are intended to be complex, yet light and uncomplicated despite their high standards. The sparkling wines are usually aged on the lees for at least 15 months. For the base wines aged in wooden barrels, which are later used to produce the reserve and grand reserve crémants, the lees ageing period is between 24 and 50 months.

For Martin Winterling, organic certification is not a chore, but a conviction: “If you live off nature, you should treat it as considerately and sustainably as possible.” On his website, he also explains: “Only a diverse soil diversity in the vineyards can secure the future of winegrowers for generations to come.” [translated]

All work in the vineyards is done by hand. During harvest, the grapes are collected in small crates and gently processed in the cellar using whole grape pressing.

One crémant even comes from a renowned single vineyard in the Mittelhardt, the Ruppertsberg Reiterpfad.

Disgorged in December 2020. Light straw yellow. Many small bubbles. Exotic scent of galia melon, mango and passion fruit with hints of flint. Initially gripping in the mouth, not a pussyfooter, also not a loudspeaker, but a personality with a healthy self-confident appearance. Fine foam. Needs air in its current phase of development. Then becomes clearly finer and more distinguished without losing expressiveness. Excellent length.

Cuvée of 85 % Pinot Noir and 15 % Chardonnay, disgorged in December 2020. Light salmon pink. Fine perlage. Elegant scent of raspberry. In the mouth clearly more present fruit. Well integrated carbonic acid. Delicately yeasty, with a floral component. A little yellow apple on the finish. Very good length. Conveys drinking pleasure at a high level.

🯅The rating of the wine is based on a single taster. The taster is named in the context of the rating. The tasting was either open or blind. In case of a blind tasting, it is explicitly labelled as such.
🯅🯅The rating of the wine is based on two tasters. The tasters are named in the context of the rating. The tasting was carried out according to the four-eyes principle, in which both tasters agree on a joint rating.
🯅🯅🯅The rating is based on a tasting by our jury and indicates the Mean value calculated by us from the individual ratings of the tasters. Our mean value is based on the median.
The wine was evaluated in a blind tasting. We have strict rules for blind tastings. The tasters do not receive any information that would allow them to identify the wines. The tasters are only given access to further information that goes beyond the subject matter if it is absolutely necessary for understanding the wines.
🕓We only had limited time to taste the wine  - typically during an open tasting event, such as a wine fair. It was therefore not possible to observe the development of the wine in the glass over a longer period of time. The informative value of our rating may therefore be limited under certain circumstances.
The wine was tasted as a barrel sample or before an official test number (Amtliche Prüfungsnummer or Staatliche Prüfnummer) was issued. We only accept samples of unfilled wines in exceptional cases, and then only if we can assume sufficient stability in the bottle for a period of at least three months.
During our tasting, the wine showed conspicuous sensory characteristics. This does not necessarily have to be a wine fault. We categorise the quality and quantity of the abnormality and include it in the rating. Wine faults such as cork taint or an atypical ageing generally lead to a complete rejection.
Tastings that refer to the same bottle of a wine are visually summarised by a dotted line.
