Albrecht Schwegler, who still runs a mechanical engineering company as his main job, founded a small winery with his wife Andrea in 1990. Although this was initially only a sideline, Schwegler quickly achieved cult status with his three red wine cuvées Beryll, Saphir and Granat. Today, their son Aaron and daughter-in-law Julia run the business, which has grown from two hectares to over 15 hectares. The winery no longer produces only red wine cuvées. Riesling and Chardonnay have been added to the range of white wines, while single-varietal Pinot Noirs and Lembergers have expanded the red wine collection.

Although the Schwegler family has always cultivated its vineyards according to ecological principles, it was not until recently that it decided to have its winery certified as organic. It is important to Aaron Schwegler to cultivate every vine in every plot in such a way that its grapes can produce the best possible wine – nature permitting. Almost all wines are aged in wood and undergo neither fining nor any other treatment before bottling.

Cuvée of Trollinger and Muskattrollinger. Reflective dark rosé. After opening the bottle, first of all with a fine scent of sweet cherry and almond, later covered by nutmeg. Very fine tannin structure, discreet wood barrel note, lactic nuances. Multilayered finish. Very good length. A quite elegant Pétillant Naturel that shows both grape varieties from their best side.

Cuvée from 79%nbsp;% Zweigelt, 13 % Cabertin and 8 % Lemberger. Opaque black-red colour. Changing, rusty-spicy aroma, initially raspberry, then alternating between blackberry and blueberry. Bordeaux-style with distinctive, ripe, harmoniously polymerised tannins. Good interplay of tannins and fruit. Expressive length.

Bordeaux-style cuvée. Dark, opaque garnet red colour. Distinctive yet subtle roasted aromas on the nose. Aromas of redcurrant, cocoa and mild coffee. There is also an ethereal component in the background. Intense, but also well-polished, coarse-grained tannins due to bottle ageing. Great depth of fruit. Elegant acidity. Has still potential for more years. Excellent length. Very persistent.

Not completely opaque, dark red with a slight violet touch. Spicy and smoky fragrance with chocolaty toasted notes and a fruity touch. Ignoring the cuvée (from Lemberger and Zweigelt), it is probably most likely to evoke associations that would suggest a Bordeaux origin if the fruit were not quite so sweet. A complexly interwoven nose makes it almost impossible to recognise a single fruit. Apart from aromas of black cherry, the mention of dark forest berries is only an attempt at an ultimately vague description. The “Beryll” glides surprisingly weightlessly over the tongue, but still shows itself to be a highly concentrated red wine with an impressive and memorable, because quite idiosyncratic and individual, taste profile that is second to none. The predominantly velvety and fine sandy, but also pleasantly angular tannins deliver a gripping duel with the fruitiness in the mouth on the basis of a stable acid foundation. In the finish, all the flavour carriers meet once again together on the big stage to bow before the audience, only to slowly disappear over a kilometre-long catwalk.

Opaque black red. Toasty spicy nose of dark red berries with hints of chocolate and coffee. Sophisticated red wine cuvée of Zweigelt and Cabertin in Bordeaux style. Present, but in the meantime well integrated by maturity, sandy to coarse-grained tannins. Excellent balance between fruit, tannins and supporting acidity. Excellent length.

🯅The rating of the wine is based on a single taster. The taster is named in the context of the rating. The tasting was either open or blind. In case of a blind tasting, it is explicitly labelled as such.
🯅🯅The rating of the wine is based on two tasters. The tasters are named in the context of the rating. The tasting was carried out according to the four-eyes principle, in which both tasters agree on a joint rating.
🯅🯅🯅The rating is based on a tasting by our jury and indicates the Mean value calculated by us from the individual ratings of the tasters. Our mean value is based on the median.
The wine was evaluated in a blind tasting. We have strict rules for blind tastings. The tasters do not receive any information that would allow them to identify the wines. The tasters are only given access to further information that goes beyond the subject matter if it is absolutely necessary for understanding the wines.
🕓We only had limited time to taste the wine  - typically during an open tasting event, such as a wine fair. It was therefore not possible to observe the development of the wine in the glass over a longer period of time. The informative value of our rating may therefore be limited under certain circumstances.
The wine was tasted as a barrel sample or before an official test number (Amtliche Prüfungsnummer or Staatliche Prüfnummer) was issued. We only accept samples of unfilled wines in exceptional cases, and then only if we can assume sufficient stability in the bottle for a period of at least three months.
During our tasting, the wine showed conspicuous sensory characteristics. This does not necessarily have to be a wine fault. We categorise the quality and quantity of the abnormality and include it in the rating. Wine faults such as cork taint or an atypical ageing generally lead to a complete rejection.
Tastings that refer to the same bottle of a wine are visually summarised by a dotted line.
