Stone AlbumPhoto: Deutsches Weininstitut
Stone Album. Along a vineyard near Großjena, a district of Naumburg, a total of twelve pictorial reliefs adorn the walls of the sandstone terraces over a length of 150 to 200 metres. Ten of the motifs depict biblical stories, six of them thematise wine. They include Noah as the first winegrower, Christ in a winepress, the wedding at Cana and the parable of the labourers in the Lord's vineyard. It is the largest relief ever carved into a fixed stone wall in Europe. Johann Christian Steinauer, jeweller and purveyor to the court of Duke Christian II of Saxe-Weissenfels, acquired a vineyard in 1720 and is the originator. Steinauer commissioned the reliefs from an unknown sculptor to honour the duke's tenth anniversary on the throne. Most of the reliefs are dated 17 March 1722, but some were created several years later. Due to the effects of the weather and the crystallisation of salt, the preservation of the monument is a challenge.
