I have enjoyed this wine on several occasions over the past ten years. The first time was as a barrel sample at the winery. Even at our first encounter, it tasted extremely promising. Shortly after bottling, however, it fell into a slump, as expected, so I decided not to touch it for a few years. Since then, a long time has passed – at least for the lifespan of a dry Riesling. Today, it shows itself to be very well matured, with a full golden yellow colour with an amber touch and the typical aroma profile of the Erden Treppchen. Peach and apricot in abundance play around the nostrils. Both fruits are even more prominent on the palate, especially in combination with the juiciness that is characteristic of Johannes Schmitz' Rieslings. The acidity acts as a ripe, structure-forming element amid a richness that is not defined by alcohol, but rather subordinated to elegance and finesse. The mineral fingerprint of the site is omnipresent, with a delicate, age-appropriate, slightly tart phenolic character that pleasantly and distinctively references the seniority of the dry Spätlese. A hint of sweetness lingers. The wine leaves the tongue in a finish that lasts for minutes, with a seemingly endless echo. A magnificent achievement! But let us return to the bouquet. With a little air, it becomes even more complex, now offering notes of a roasted coffee bean, which make a little room for itselve at the expense of peach and apricot. After a good hour, the taste coordinates also change slightly on the palate. Perhaps the Erden Treppchen seems more serious, but in any case it is clearly more complex, with a more deeply interwoven multi-layeredness.

Golden yellow. Restrained aroma of nectarine and peach. Very mineral on the palate, quite lean, structured acidity, slight bitterness, excellent length. Ten years ago, when I first tasted it at the winery, I had slight doubts given the difficult vintage, but the wine has now swept those doubts aside. A remarkable development that once again shows how important the factor of maturity can be.

Greenish golden yellow. Slightly salty bouquet of fully ripe stone fruits, characterised by botrytis notes, in the typical expression of apricot, peach and nectarine from the Ürziger Würzgarten. At 9 % vol alcohol, not overly sweet, making it an Auslese in the classic sense, well suited as a food companion. Good balance. Ripe, integrated acidity. Excellent length.

Golden yellow with amber hints. Already in the nose with opulent fruit density and concentrated aromas of nectarine and apricot, partly reminiscent of jam. Delicate ripening tone. Juicy and powerful Spätlese in the traditional style, not primarily aiming for sweetness. Well-integrated, harmonious acidity. Excellent length and persistence. A good accompaniment to foie gras.

2011 was a very hot, dry year. Nevertheless, yields exploded, and the measures taken to reduce yields were literally wasted in many places. It was not uncommon for the legal maximum yield limits to be exceeded. With the benefit of hindsight, the Riesling vintage appears divided into two camps. On the one hand, there are wines with little fruit, a perfumed bouquet and downright pitiful acidity levels. On the other hand, especially in the noble sweet sector, there are wines bursting with juice and boasting lush tropical fruit aromas. However, very few of them are truly great. Johannes Schmitz's Auslese Fass Nr. 24 must therefore appear in the context of the vintage as if it comes from another planet (where, purely by chance, there is Riesling and a second Ürzig Würzgarten). A rich amber orange sparkles in the glass. As expected, the nose offers the scent of botrytis, here in its perfect form, reminiscent of dried fruit. Expressive and expansive, with the concentrated aroma of a sun-ripened orange. Without drifting into clumsy opulence, the Auslese is present right to the back of the mouth. At the same time, despite its inner density, it glides surprisingly easily over the tongue. Sweetness is an important flavour carrier here, but it is balanced by a ripe, well-integrated acidity with a slightly restrained handbrake. This results in a great balance between all parameters. Outstanding length and sustainability.

Bright golden yellow with bright reflections. Already in the nose with the typical fruit profile of the Würzgarten, consisting of peach and nectarine aromas. Very concentrated on the tongue and surprisingly powerful with only 11.5 % vol alcohol. Great density and juiciness. Vital acidity, excellent balance, not too sweet. Excellent length and persistence.

Full, bright golden yellow. Fulminant fragrance of dried yellow fruits like peach, apricot and orange. Fine hints of herbal sugar. Viscous, juicy elixir, for all its density not ponderous, but gliding playfully over the tongue, flanked by a ripe, piquant and well-integrated acidity. Actually deserves to be declared as an Auslese. Excellent length.

Golden to amber yellow. Expansive, complex aroma of ripe, partly candied and dried yellow fruits with hints of hazelnut. Juicy fullness of fruit, the hazelnut aromas are more prominent on the tongue than on the nose. Fine acid structure corresponding to the hot vintage. Reasonable, moderate sweetness. Despite its concentration, in no way saturating, but animating with every sip. Excellent length. In the style of an Auslese. Exceeded the high expectations.

Golden to amber yellow. Enchanting, quite opulent scent of hazelnut, caramel and ripe yellow fruits. More powerful in stature than most other 2005s of the region and consequently already less marked by sweetness. Juicy Riesling fruit, very moderate acidity typical of the vintage. Fine spicy hints reminiscent of green herbs. Excellent length. In the style of a Auslese.

🯅The rating of the wine is based on a single taster. The taster is named in the context of the rating. The tasting was either open or blind. In case of a blind tasting, it is explicitly labelled as such.
🯅🯅The rating of the wine is based on two tasters. The tasters are named in the context of the rating. The tasting was carried out according to the four-eyes principle, in which both tasters agree on a joint rating.
🯅🯅🯅The rating is based on a tasting by our jury and indicates the Mean value calculated by us from the individual ratings of the tasters. Our mean value is based on the median.
The wine was evaluated in a blind tasting. We have strict rules for blind tastings. The tasters do not receive any information that would allow them to identify the wines. The tasters are only given access to further information that goes beyond the subject matter if it is absolutely necessary for understanding the wines.
🕓We only had limited time to taste the wine  - typically during an open tasting event, such as a wine fair. It was therefore not possible to observe the development of the wine in the glass over a longer period of time. The informative value of our rating may therefore be limited under certain circumstances.
The wine was tasted as a barrel sample or before an official test number (Amtliche Prüfungsnummer or Staatliche Prüfnummer) was issued. We only accept samples of unfilled wines in exceptional cases, and then only if we can assume sufficient stability in the bottle for a period of at least three months.
During our tasting, the wine showed conspicuous sensory characteristics. This does not necessarily have to be a wine fault. We categorise the quality and quantity of the abnormality and include it in the rating. Wine faults such as cork taint or an atypical ageing generally lead to a complete rejection.
Tastings that refer to the same bottle of a wine are visually summarised by a dotted line.
