One of Gunter Künstler's most remarkable Rieslings regularly comes from the vineyard in Hochheim Stielweg, which was planted in 1964. Declared a dry Auslese at the end of the 1990s, the wine is now labelled a Erste Lage, nominally second only to the Große Gewächse. However, it does not have to hide there at all. The 2021 meets the expectations that one can have of a dry world-class Riesling, regardless of the estate and association's own classifications. The focus here is not on concentration and density, but on elegance and finesse. This is not the first time that we have encountered ripe apricot and tropical flavours in the breathtakingly mineral nose of the shimmering green-yellow Stielweg. After an exciting opening on the tongue, the Stielweg shines with great depth and complexity, finesse and elegance. A delicate green herbaceousness dances back and forth in the mouth and plays around the fruit characterised by maracuja. The acidity vibrates softly. Extremely long and persistent. This is Riesling. This is Stielweg.

Delicate salmon pink. Fine, quickly rising perlage. Initially smells of red and green apple, then after a few minutes in the air increasingly complex with a rich aroma of quince and cassis, later also of bergamot and ginger. On the tongue with a delicate yeasty note, floral-vegetable component, ripe acidity and very good length.

Golden yellow. Fine perlage. Yeasty, restrained brioche aroma with delicate Riesling fruit. For all its purism, very balanced and on the tongue with aromas of grapefruit and fine nuances of green-red apple. In the finish also some melon. Very long and persistent.

“Versektet in Flörsheim-Dalsheim” (Made to sparkling wine in Flörsheim-Dalsheim) is the meaningful note on the label. White golden straw yellow. Fine, quickly rising bubbles. Straightforward aroma of yellow lemon with a hint of Moroccan mint. Dry in the mouth, quite puristic in appearance. Very good length. Vegetal notes in the finish. Immediately recognisable as a Rheingau Riesling in our blind tasting.

Golden yellow. Fine perlage. In the nose, iridescent. At times the fruit of a ripe pear appears, then again liquorice takes up almost the entire perceptible space. Also hints of walnut. On the palate, a typical vintage representative with rather little fruit, but creamy substance. Sustained and with very good length.

🯅The rating of the wine is based on a single taster. The taster is named in the context of the rating. The tasting was either open or blind. In case of a blind tasting, it is explicitly labelled as such.
🯅🯅The rating of the wine is based on two tasters. The tasters are named in the context of the rating. The tasting was carried out according to the four-eyes principle, in which both tasters agree on a joint rating.
🯅🯅🯅The rating is based on a tasting by our jury and indicates the Mean value calculated by us from the individual ratings of the tasters. Our mean value is based on the median.
The wine was evaluated in a blind tasting. We have strict rules for blind tastings. The tasters do not receive any information that would allow them to identify the wines. The tasters are only given access to further information that goes beyond the subject matter if it is absolutely necessary for understanding the wines.
🕓We only had limited time to taste the wine  - typically during an open tasting event, such as a wine fair. It was therefore not possible to observe the development of the wine in the glass over a longer period of time. The informative value of our rating may therefore be limited under certain circumstances.
The wine was tasted as a barrel sample or before an official test number (Amtliche Prüfungsnummer or Staatliche Prüfnummer) was issued. We only accept samples of unfilled wines in exceptional cases, and then only if we can assume sufficient stability in the bottle for a period of at least three months.
During our tasting, the wine showed conspicuous sensory characteristics. This does not necessarily have to be a wine fault. We categorise the quality and quantity of the abnormality and include it in the rating. Wine faults such as cork taint or an atypical ageing generally lead to a complete rejection.
Tastings that refer to the same bottle of a wine are visually summarised by a dotted line.
