In 1967, Karl Erbes († 2022), previously an oenologist at five renowned wineries in Ürzig, set up his own business. Today, his son Stefan continues to run the business, cultivating five hectares in Ürzig and Erden, exclusively Riesling on steep and very steep slopes. The vines are all ungrafted and up to 80 years old.

The outstanding vineyard In der Kranklei above the sundial, formerly also known as Kranklay, which belongs to the Ürzig Würzgarten, has been classified as a single vineyard under wine law since 2014. Many experts consider Kranklei to be the better Würzgarten. At the very least, the soil structure and good water supply justify a differentiation. Stefan Erbes' Kranklei Rieslings regularly have distinctive aromas reminiscent of star fruit in addition to the typical nectarine of the Würzgarten.

In 2012, Erbes was able to lease part of the legendary Erden Prälat vineyard from the former Moselschild winery, which originally belonged to the Geschwister Berres – Joh. Berres jr. Erben winery.

While Erbes was previously exclusively a specialist for fruity and noble sweet Rieslings, dry wines are becoming increasingly important. As befits wines from old, ungrafted vines that have been gently treated in the cellar, they mature impressively and show no signs of fatigue even after decades.

Bottle leakage

Tasted on 11 January 2026 by Werner Elflein

Opened due to the discovery of a bottle leak during a cellar inspection. Pure golden yellow with bright reflections. Subtle herbal spice on the nose. Fine, concentrated aroma of dried nectarine, bitter orange zest and citrus fruits with hints of stone fruits. Fruity, juicy opening on the palate, with moderate sweetness and buffering, well-balanced acidity. Compact in structure due to the vintage, yet with depth. Excellent length and persistence.

2015 produced very concentrated, ripe Rieslings on the Moselle, which, despite the dryness during the summer months, have a fairly lively acidity. However, these parameters do not explain Stefan Erbes' Kabinett from the Ürzig Würzgarten. The wine is not just a mystery. It presents itself as a true paradox. Not a simple one, like the well-known of Achilles and the tortoise. This is already a matter of dimensions on the level of Banach and Tarski's theorem. For here, too, volume seems to arise out of nowhere. But first things first. At first glance, everything seems clear when looking at the label. But even the colour, a rich golden yellow with sparkling reflections, is surprising. On the nose, the aromas of fruit jam (apricot, nectarine), which are quite lush given the predicate level, promise a sweetness that is not exactly restrained. Combined with 8.5 % alcohol, this suggests a graded Spätlese, if not an Auslese. Convinced? Almost. Were it not for the lightness and elegance with which this wine does not glide over the tongue, but literally hovers. Based on this perception alone, it can only be a genuine Kabinett. A delicate interplay of concentrated fruit and ripe acidity. Each sip encourages the next. Very good length.

Golden yellow. Delicate botrytis aroma with pronounced berry notes. A stylistically unusual selection for the winery, because there is significantly less fruit, typically nectarine, than usual. 2013 was not an easy year for Ürzig. While the Middle Moselle elsewhere got off lightly in autumn, rot caused significantly more problems for the single-pole trained vineyards in the Würzgarten. It was very much a matter of skilful – and in this case truly successful – botrytis selection. As a result, however, the Auslese is creamier, the acidity is very well integrated, and the sweetness is even decidedly moderate. A subtle spiciness spreads across the palate. Excellent length.

In 2012, Stefan Erbes was able to lease a part of the Erden Prälat vineyard from the former Berres family winery. Right from his first vintage, he has created a true masterpiece that could not better reflect the special characteristics of this exceptional vineyard. For a noble sweet selection, this 2012 is remarkably clear. After more than ten years, its light golden yellow colour suggests that the botrytis was not too abundant. In fact, this Prälat appears surprisingly clear and pure on the nose. The typical aroma of sun-ripened oranges is much more pronounced today than it was last year. The sweetness is not too prominent. The acidity provides structure and lends freshness and tension. The Auslese is juicy and intense on the palate and seems reluctant to leave it even minutes after swallowing.

After more than ten years of ageing in the bottle, a strikingly bright and clear golden yellow. Only a delicate hint of botrytis on the nose. Focussed, soft aroma of ripe orange. Not overly sweet despite its concentration, perfect berry selection, clear and very clean. With just the right amount of acidity. Minute-long finish. A Prälat from the picture book.

Light old gold, almost rosé in colour. Bouquet characterised by partly dried and partly – surprisingly – fresh fruit. As a young wine, it tends towards lush concentration, but time is now revealing its plan for this wine. Peach and nectarine, typical of the Ürzig Würzgarten, are present here in all their forms. As freshly picked fruit, candied, pickled and dried. Accompanied by a lively, radiant acidity, there is no heaviness. In fact, it is probably much sweeter than it appears. Excellent length.

Full golden yellow colour. Fruity nose with aromas of apricot and apricot jam. The lush yet delicate fruit continues to harmonise excellently with a well-balanced sweetness. Subtle acidity, but quite lively in the context of the vintage. Vibrant. Very good length. Age-appropriate development.

Light straw yellow. Fragrance reminiscent of butter cream with partly tertiary, partly fruity notes. Only on the tongue do recognizable aromas of nectarine, nectarine skin and yellow-fleshed pear unfold. The lush fruit harmonizes perfectly with a well-balanced sweetness. Subtle but quite vital acidity in the vintage context. In the long finish it shows banana as well as the first signs of firn.

Golden yellow in colour. Amazingly youthful bouquet with a brilliant aroma of apricot, peach and the rather subtle star fruit so typical of the Kranklay. Finest botrytis note. Between bright lemon yellow and white gold. At first a little restless in the still slightly sulphurous nose, the mandarin scent, which becomes more pronounced with increasing contact with air, is initially masked by this. On the tongue it is highly exciting, with a pleasant phenolic attack, a fine berry note, a touch of pear and an exotic touch. Integrated acidity, well balanced sweetness. Excellent length. Tasted on 12 June 2020 by Werner Elflein

Greenish straw to golden yellow. Ripe Riesling fragrance, fine mineral nose. Juicy starfruit, which reveals the origin of the terroir “In der Kranklei”. Well-integrated acidity, not excessively sweet, harmonious, anything but fragile and with potential for many years to come. Excellent length.

🯅The rating of the wine is based on a single taster. The taster is named in the context of the rating. The tasting was either open or blind. In case of a blind tasting, it is explicitly labelled as such.
🯅🯅The rating of the wine is based on two tasters. The tasters are named in the context of the rating. The tasting was carried out according to the four-eyes principle, in which both tasters agree on a joint rating.
🯅🯅🯅The rating is based on a tasting by our jury and indicates the Mean value calculated by us from the individual ratings of the tasters. Our mean value is based on the median.
The wine was evaluated in a blind tasting. We have strict rules for blind tastings. The tasters do not receive any information that would allow them to identify the wines. The tasters are only given access to further information that goes beyond the subject matter if it is absolutely necessary for understanding the wines.
🕓We only had limited time to taste the wine  - typically during an open tasting event, such as a wine fair. It was therefore not possible to observe the development of the wine in the glass over a longer period of time. The informative value of our rating may therefore be limited under certain circumstances.
The wine was tasted as a barrel sample or before an official test number (Amtliche Prüfungsnummer or Staatliche Prüfnummer) was issued. We only accept samples of unfilled wines in exceptional cases, and then only if we can assume sufficient stability in the bottle for a period of at least three months.
During our tasting, the wine showed conspicuous sensory characteristics. This does not necessarily have to be a wine fault. We categorise the quality and quantity of the abnormality and include it in the rating. Wine faults such as cork taint or an atypical ageing generally lead to a complete rejection.
Tastings that refer to the same bottle of a wine are visually summarised by a dotted line.
