Golden yellow. Deep, mineral aroma of peach and apricot with hints of yellow apple. Refined, delicate, elegant Kabinett with a delicate sweetness. Fine spice on the palate. Excellent length. Traditional style. Great potential. Still youthful and fresh after a good twelve years in the bottle.

Golden yellow with sparkling reflections. Mineral, delicate, quite restrained aroma. Hardly any primary fruit. Ripe Riesling aromas with subtle hints of yellow stone fruit. Harmoniously matured, with elegant, perfectly integrated acidity and moderate sweetness. Classic style, spontaneously fermented in wooden barrels. Very long and persistent.

Pale yellow. Discreet floral nose with a soft scent of nectarine and Williams pear. With only 10.5 % vol alcohol and a corresponding lightness on the tongue, it gives the first impression of being more of a Kabinett than a Spätlese. But on the palate the wine unfolds and penetrates every corner of the mouth. At the same time, it is extraordinarily elegant and subtle, almost weightless, and yet demanding. Focused and very dry in taste, again with floral notes. Delicate mineral spice. Authentic Würzgarten style. Very long and with good reverberation.

Light yellow with bright reflections. Impressively clear nose, purest slate scent with fine peach aromas. In the mouth with a juicy attack. Lots of fruit flesh that lays on the tongue; slightly tart note. Excellent acidity. The 2010 vintage does not show itself here with a prominent acidity, but excellently balanced. Sweetness and acidity are in harmony on a quantitatively high level. Refreshing and animating. Great density, and that with minimal 7 % vol alcohol. Very good depth, extreme length and persistence.

Light golden greenish yellow. Fascinating, multi-layered and finest, mineral scent of peach and apricot. On the tongue juicy, yet cool, with vibrating minerality, finesse-rich acidity and delicate sweetness. Concentrated fruit aromas. Green herbal notes on the finish. Excellent length and endless finish. A real cool-climate Kabinett.

Full straw yellow with golden reflections. Distinct spontaneous fermentation aromas and notes of fully ripe nectarine on the nose. An elegant yet juicy Spätlese with fine acidity and a delicate, unobtrusive sweetness. Remarkably restrained for a Riesling from the Ürziger Würzgarten. Subtle, rather understated spice. Captivating despite its quiet tones. Excellent length.

Greenish golden yellow. Fulminant, fruity nose in the style of the vintage. Pure apricot aroma. Stylish arrangement of beguiling, but at no time exuberant fruit, extremely moderate acidity and great subtlety. Excellent length.

Mahogany gold. A potpourri of dried citrus fruits. Slightly oily consistency. Creamy on the tongue with excellent concentration. Ripe, rather moderate acidity to match the dry and hot vintage. Not excessively sweet. Ripe, dried orange on the finish. Exceptional length. Lingers in the mouth for hours.

Full straw yellow with golden accents. Aroma of ripe fruit, especially apricot, quince and yellow apple. On the tongue with a delicate creamy attack, fine, elegant acidity, juicy Riesling fruit and a texture reminiscent of a mealy banana. Harmonious sweetness that does not push itself into the foreground. Excellent length. A more than remarkable achievement for the extreme tropical vintage 2003.

Full, bright and reflective golden yellow. Seemingly reserved on the nose. However, the subtle bouquet contains a veritable cornucopia of fruits that go far beyond the usual typical aroma spectrum of the Ürzig Würzgarten. Delicate hints of nectarine are joined by ripe banana, mango and even a touch of pineapple. The fruit aromas then intensify on the palate. The sweetness appears appropriate. The acidity remains elegantly in the background, but is significantly more vibrant than is usually the case in 2003. Here, the Würzgarten benefited from the age of the deep-rooted vines and the consistently good water supply during the extremely hot summer with warm nights. A magnificent Riesling made in the traditional style. Fine wood barrel notes. Excellent length.

Greenish straw yellow. Fine spicy slate nose. Elegant peach note developing with a little air, alongside delicate roasted aromas reminiscent of coffee bean. Complex opening on the palate. Roasted aromas again, but more noticeable on the tongue than in the bouquet. Juicy Riesling fruit with only slight notes of ripeness. With 9.5 % vol alcohol, nevertheless develops sufficient pressure in the mouth. Accentuated, but almost perfectly integrated, ripe acidity. Needs a while of air after opening the bottle. Excellent length and persistence. Very typical of its origin.

It is not easy to answer the question about the best vintages that Karl-Josef Christoffel (1932-2021) was able to produce in his life as a winemaker. 1959? Is certainly one of them. He himself once named 2010 as his personal favourite. 2001? One of our favourites. The Erden Prälat Riesling Auslese *** from that year. 7.5 % vol alcohol, still vital acidity. The surprising thing: The sweetness. The sweetness is only a peripheral sensory phenomenon here. Golden yellow in colour. Ripe orange with a hint of grapefruit, delicate herbal spice on the palate, but just that hint of sweetness that supports the perfect interplay of all flavour parameters.

White-golden shimmering lemon yellow. Mineral bouquet marked by spicy spontaneous fermentation aromas with the finest scent of ripe citrus fruits. Great elegance, slender Spätlese style. Despite enormous lightness with quiet but penetrating fruitiness and very good presence on the palate. Restrained sweetness, ripe and integrated acidity. Excellent length, spicy finish. Mosel classic at its best. Blossoms clearly with a little air. Shows hardly any signs of age and should remain in its current top form for a long time.

White-golden shimmering lemon yellow. Mineral, quite complex bouquet marked by spontaneous fermentation aromas. Restrained scent of citrus fruits. Despite enormous lightness with quiet but insistent fruitiness and very good presence on the palate. Delicate sweetness. Piquant, excellently integrated acidity. Excellent length, elegant finish. Shows clear parallels to its counterpart from the Graacher Domprobst, the vineyard characteristics (similar to the Wehlener Sonnenuhr, just a touch spicier) clearly emerge. Hardly aged.

Amber gold with a reddish touch due to maturity. Mature, finely spiced Riesling aroma of partly fresh, partly dried figs. In the background, there is also a hint of dates. Distinctly earthy/tertiary aromas. In the mouth, the dried fruits come to life and reveal a wonderful freshness. Great complexity. Perfect balance between lively, excellently integrated acidity and perfectly balanced, delicate sweetness. Endless depth and length. Undoubtedly one of the great classics of Mosel Riesling in the 1990s.

Straw yellow in colour. Intense green-herbaceous aroma that initially masks the fine fruit. The orange flavours typical of Erden Prälat then unfold on the palate, surprisingly concentrated in view of its ripeness and cool-climate character, but at the same time fine and elegant. The herbaceous flavour recedes into the background. Harmoniously integrated acidity. Outstanding balance. The fact that the Auslese has now been in the bottle for 36 years and has never been re-corked speaks for its extraordinarily high quality. Excellent length.

An exceptional wine from an exceptional vintage. Only in three vintages (1971, 1975 and 1976) did Jos. Christoffel jr. ever produce a Auslese ***** from the Wehlener Sonnenuhr. In terms of must weight, this is a Beerenauslese, but in the style of a “hochfeinste” Auslese. Rests in itself and seems timeless. Magnificent elegance. A masterpiece of German Riesling culture, matured in all honour.
