Gut Steyerberg

Schweppenhausen • Germany

gut-steyerberg.jpgPhoto: weinfreaks.de

Gut Steyerberg emerged from the Fuchs-Jacobus winery, which was one of the pioneers of biodynamic viticulture in Germany in the 1980s. Alice and Thorben Bosse took over the business from Wilfried and Marlene Jacobus, who once moved from Waldlaubersheim and built a new residential and estate building on the Schweppenhäuser Steyerberg.

Around 16 hectares of vineyards are in production. In addition to Riesling, the white Burgundy varieties and Pinot Noir, Pinot Noir plays an important role.

The Steyerberg has an extraordinary terroir. The soil is characterized by greenish slate, the altitude means the grapes ripen later, and the pronounced thermal conditions help the grapes dry quickly, preventing fungal infestation.

The wines are generally marketed as country wines. No additives other than sulphur are used in their preparation.

The rating of the wine reflects the mean value from a tasting by our jury.
The wine was evaluated in a blind tasting.
The wine was tasted as a barrel sample or before an official test number (Amtliche Prüfungsnummer or Staatliche Prüfnummer) was issued.
The wine exhibited a sensory abnormality during our tasting. This does not necessarily have to be a qualitative defect or a wine fault. In the case of a qualitative impairment, a devaluation or rejection was made depending on the type and severity of the defect or wine fault.

Bright, yeasty amber orange colour. Complex aroma of grapefruit, kumquat, orange marzipan and artichoke. On the palate with juicy fruit fullness and high-quality, warming phenolics that do not drift into bitterness. Filled without added sulphur, still youthful, completely stable and without signs of maturity. Very good length. An outstanding natural wine.

Light white gold colour. Multi-layered bouquet with fine, Christmas-like spice aromas. The wine is not characterised by expressive fruit aromas, but by inner peace and harmony. Quiet whispering instead of loud shouting. Long yeast ageing and malolactic fermentation give it a creamy structure with elegant acidity. Outstanding balance. It is full of energy and radiates naturalness. Slate particles penetrate the tongue. Great substance. Excellent length. The wine drinker embarks on a journey of discovery that only comes to an end when the bottle is empty. We strongly recommend to decant the wine.

When tasters are at a loss, they often write about the supposed minerality of a wine. We really find it in Thorben Bosse's Riesling “Interiora”. Lemon yellow colour. Intense mineral and serious aroma of rock salt and iodine. There are also hints of hazelnut, nougat and dried herbs. Vibrant and lively on the tongue. Delicate creaminess. Vital acidity. Clear and persistent saltiness on the palate. Excellent length. Subtle ethereal note on the finish. Needs air. The flavours develop particularly well in a large Burgundy glass.

Slightly cloudy garnet red colour with medium transparency. Smoky nose with extraordinarily complex aromas of sweet cherry, coffee, toffee and caramel. There are also subtle hints of brown mushroom and some salty blue cheese (Roquefort) in the background. Shows rough edges on the palate and does not want to conform to the image of a velvety Pinot. Good acidity structure. Herbal spice, fine roasted flavours, some blueberry. Very good length. Should definitely be decanted a few hours before drinking.

Full cherry-garnet colour with a clear cloudiness. Cool flavour of blueberry. Shows rough edges on the palate and does not want to conform to the image of a velvety Pinot. Good acidity structure. Fine spiciness, subtle roasted flavours, again clearly blueberry. Very good length. Should definitely be decanted a few hours before drinking.

Slightly cloudy garnet red colour with medium transparency. Complex bouquet with aromas of cherry, blueberry and blueberry leaves. Reminiscent of wet seabed. Vital acidity on the palate and partly pithy, partly velvety tannins. Blueberry again. Very good length. Needs some air after opening the bottle.

Salmon pink. Very fine perlage. Appealing, fruity aroma of raspberry and strawberry. Obviously not in the style of a champagne, but still with strength and character. Uncomplicated, but by no means banal. Glides light as a feather over the tongue despite – surprise! – 13.5 % alcohol. Very good length.
