“Arnold”, the – according to the translated subtitle on the label – “white wine for the well-trained”. A Chardonnay that Frank Heyden carefully pressed after a long maceration period, fermented in large wooden barrels and stored on the lees until bottling. Minimally sulphurised. Slightly greenish straw yellow colour. Delicately buttery aroma of citrus. Creamy mouthfeel and fresh, vital acidity meet on the tongue. This does not have to be a contradiction in terms – and in this case it is not. A Chardonnay that is an enormous pleasure to drink and lingers for a while after the finish thanks to its outstanding length.

Initially quite transparent, light red colour, darkening with air. Delicately spicy Pinot aroma of cassis, raspberry and other light red berries. Highly elegant and delicately fruity on the palate, deep and complex, with velvety tannins. Outstanding length. Frank Heyden recommends eight hours of aeration in a carafe. You can do that. But the wine also finds its balance earlier.

Opaque black-red colour. Old-wood flavour of dark berries with a delicate smoky component. Good concentration on the palate. Full-bodied Merlot with a stable acid foundation. Fine and dense fruity flavours reminiscent of morello cherry. Decent depth, long finish.

Greenish white gold. Concentrated mineral fragrance of honeydew melon and nectarine seed with a delicate herbaceous note. Enormous presence on the palate. 14 % vol alcohol shows excellent integration. Despite its strong stature not ponderous, with fine, elegant acidity. Tastes dry, without any concealing sweetness. Excellent depth and length. A Silvaner at Grand Cru level.

Greenish yellow colour. Delicate aroma of pink grapefruit with faint hints of gooseberry. As on the nose, the pyrazines typical of the grape variety are more noticeable on the palate through a spicy than a vegetal flavour component. The wine is just entering its tertiary ripening phase. The fruit is fading and structure and flavour are gaining in importance. Not uncompromisingly dry. However, the existing level of sugar proves to be extremely beneficial for the balance of flavour in the current phase. Outstanding length.

Fermented in half-barrels. Amber yellow. A Riesling matured with dignity in the style of a Grand Cru. Still with a brilliant, expansive aroma reminiscent of yellow apples, but also of a basket of tropical fruits. Concentrated and powerful on the palate, but by no means overloaded. Clearly a well-bred child of its vintage, which has produced mainly dry Riesling wines that were long rather monolithic and inaccessible. But this 2017 Riesling from Oppenheim Sackträger has now opened up and is showing its true class. Creamy substance, perfectly integrated, ripe acidity. Distinct extract sweetness. Excellent length and great sustainability.

Brilliant full straw yellow with a slight green shimmer. Yellow fruity nose, mainly citrus, but not entirely precisely defined, with a slight rustic touch. On the palate, it is smooth, with an invigorating, fresh acidity that gives the wine a good measure of slenderness despite its volume. Not uncompromisingly dry, but perfectly balanced and coherent. Very good length.

Brilliant, slightly greenish straw yellow with golden reflections. Delicate smoky, complexly intertwined and floral scent of damask rose, yellow apricot and candied pineapple. In the background some yoghurt with not fully ripe wild strawberry. Not quite dry taste. Elegant acidity. Discreet, but considering the ripeness appropriate phenolic component. Slightly green herbaceous. Excellently balanced, with a consistently high presence on the palate. Has style. Very good length.

🯅The rating of the wine is based on a single taster. The taster is named in the context of the rating. The tasting was either open or blind. In case of a blind tasting, it is explicitly labelled as such.
🯅🯅The rating of the wine is based on two tasters. The tasters are named in the context of the rating. The tasting was carried out according to the four-eyes principle, in which both tasters agree on a joint rating.
🯅🯅🯅The rating is based on a tasting by our jury and indicates the Mean value calculated by us from the individual ratings of the tasters. Our mean value is based on the median.
The wine was evaluated in a blind tasting. We have strict rules for blind tastings. The tasters do not receive any information that would allow them to identify the wines. The tasters are only given access to further information that goes beyond the subject matter if it is absolutely necessary for understanding the wines.
🕓We only had limited time to taste the wine  - typically during an open tasting event, such as a wine fair. It was therefore not possible to observe the development of the wine in the glass over a longer period of time. The informative value of our rating may therefore be limited under certain circumstances.
The wine was tasted as a barrel sample or before an official test number (Amtliche Prüfungsnummer or Staatliche Prüfnummer) was issued. We only accept samples of unfilled wines in exceptional cases, and then only if we can assume sufficient stability in the bottle for a period of at least three months.
During our tasting, the wine showed conspicuous sensory characteristics. This does not necessarily have to be a wine fault. We categorise the quality and quantity of the abnormality and include it in the rating. Wine faults such as cork taint or an atypical ageing generally lead to a complete rejection.
Tastings that refer to the same bottle of a wine are visually summarised by a dotted line.
