Bickensohler Weinvogtei

Vogtsburg im Kaiserstuhl • Germany

Bickensohl is a district of the town of Vogtsburg im Kaiserstuhl. The village was first mentioned in a document in 1048 AD. The first evidence of viticulture in the village, which has just about 400 inhabitants, dates back to 1387.

In 1924, 45 winegrower families founded the Winzergenossenschaft Bickensohl, which has since been renamed to Bickensohler Weinvogtei. Today, the 150 members of the cooperative cultivate around 140 hectares of vines, most of which are planted with the classic Burgundy grape varieties.

In terms of wine law, Bickensohl has two individual vineyards: the north-west facing Steinfelsen with its loess soils to the south of the village and the Herrenstück, where volcanic rock can be found under a layer of loess. While the Herrenstück largely faces south-west to west-south-west and lies to the north of the village, a small, north-facing section of the single vineyard borders the Steinfelsen in the direction of Oberrotweil.

In addition to the single vineyard sites, the Weinvogtei also uses the old vineyard name Kühler Morgen, which refers to vineyards with a cooler microclimate.

The wine was evaluated in a blind tasting.
The wine was tasted as a barrel sample or before an official test number (Amtliche Prüfungsnummer or Staatliche Prüfnummer) was issued.
The wine exhibited a sensory abnormality during our tasting. This does not necessarily have to be a qualitative defect or a wine fault. In the case of a qualitative impairment, a devaluation or rejection was made depending on the type and severity of the defect or wine fault.

Natural winewhitedryPinot Gris

2020 Grauburgunder SK Landwein trocken

Germany

Lot 03/23 • 13.5 % alcohol

15.5

Tasted on 31 March 2024 by Werner Elflein

Mash-fermented natural wine with a bright dark rosé-orange colour. Due to its aroma of red berries, especially redcurrant, hazelnut and delicate roasted notes, this Pinot Gris could easily be mistaken for a red wine. On the palate, the flavours of dried yellow fruit typical of the grape variety dominate. Shows substance and character. The phenolic flavour is by no means bitter. Fine acidity. Very good length. Even if the style raises expectations of an orange wine of the purist kind – this is exactly what the wine cannot and does not want to be. For inexperienced wine lovers who want to familiarise themselves with orange wines, it is undoubtedly a successful introduction.
