Moselle Rieslings with a dry flavour profile

Image: PixabayA good 150 years ago, when Rieslings from the Moselle achieved higher international prices than red wines from Bordeaux and Burgundy, noble sweet top wines played only a secondary role. Auslesen, Beerenauslesen and Trockenbeerenauslesen were extremely rare. At the time, it were mainly Rieslings with a dry flavour that made the winegrowers of the Moselle, Saar and Ruwer successful. It was not until after the Second World War that the region gained great importance as a source of outstanding fruity and noble sweet wines. The production of great dry Rieslings largely came to a standstill. But after the end of the sweet wine wave, the focus is increasingly back on dry Rieslings. We look into the question of whether the Moselle region can resume its old tradition.
From the Romans to today
There is no historical evidence that the Celts were already cultivating vines along the Moselle and its tributaries. But at the latest under Roman occupation from the first century BC, the region developed into an important wine-growing area. Riesling did not yet play a role at the time of the Romans. The grape variety from the Upper Rhine, a natural cross between Heunisch, Traminer and the wild vine Vitis vinifera subsp. sylvestris, was initially unable to establish itself on a large scale in German viticulture due to its low yields and late ripening. The decisive turning point came in 1787.
The Elector of Trier, Clemens Wenzeslaus of Saxony, decreed that only “good vines” were to be cultivated in his domain. As a result, the largest contiguous Riesling region in the world was created along Moselle, Saar and Ruwer.
Some sources state that the Elector of Trier himself explicitly ordered the planting of Riesling. However, this is not correct. In the wording of the decree, there is only the request to eradicate a type of vine known as “rheinisch” within seven years. It is only in various implementing regulations to the decree that the grape varieties Riesling and Kleinberger (Elbling) are specifically mentioned. Even before the Elector's decree came into force, Riesling had already become somewhat widespread on the Moselle, among others in Piesport, Traben-Trarbach and Brauneberg.
We can largely only speculate about the taste of the Rieslings of the 19th century. However, we can assume that many of them rightly achieved record prices worldwide. In fact, Rieslings from the Moselle were more highly regarded at the time than the best red wines of France. Those who claim that the Moselle traditionally distinguished itself with the production of fruity, sweet Spätlesen and Auslesen in the style we know and enjoy today are ignoring the historical facts. The technical prerequisites for producing these wines, including sterile filtration, have only existed since the early 20th century and only found their way into German wine cellars on a broad front after the Second World War. So, apart from naturally sweet rarities, the great Rieslings of the 19th century must have essentially tasted dry to off-dry.
Our tasting
There is no question that the Moselle has the best prerequisites for producing great dry Rieslings. In many publications, however, the region is only secondarily associated with dry wines. At present, there are mainly the southern growing regions that top the best lists in the relevant wine guides and magazines.
Image: weinfreaks.deHowever, it does not seem plausible to us, nor does it correspond to our perception, that the great potential of the vineyards between Koblenz and Serrig is not reflected in highest ratings. We ask heretically: Have the winegrowers of the Moselle forgotten how to produce dry Rieslings as a result of the wave of sweetness in the times of the German Economic Miracle? Or is it rather on the part of wine journalists and critics that there is a need for training?
At the beginning of 2016, we wanted to know more. The idea for our tasting Mosella patria vini sicci (translated: Moselle, home of dry wines) was born. We were positively surprised by the response to our project on the Moselle, Saar and Ruwer. It became clear to us relatively quickly that we had asked the right question from the point of view of consumers and winegrowers. 44 wineries provided us with a total of 169 wines for our tasting, usually two bottles per wine. In addition, there were three wines from renowned wineries in Rhinehessen, which we sent into the race as “pirates”.
We admitted Rieslings with a maximum residual sugar content of 15 g/l to the tastings. Because: analytical values only provide very limited information about the taste of a wine. The legislator has set the limit for dry wines for all German wine-growing regions uniformly and more or less arbitrarily at 9 g/l and introduced a tolerance of 1 g/l residual sugar a few years ago. While 10 g/l residual sugar is already too much of a good thing for some growing regions in our opinion, a residual sugar content of up to 15 g/l makes perfect sense in the Mosel, provided that the fruit sweetness and acid structure are in harmony and the wine does not just taste sweet-sour.
After a few months of preparation, our tasting work began in July 2016. As a rule, each wine was subjected to four individual tastings. In March 2017, we uncorked the last bottle.
Our conclusion
After almost a year, the result of our tasting was clear. Several wines achieved the highest ratings of 18, 18.5 and 19 points. Not among them were the three Rhinehessian “pirates”. The dry 2014 Rieslings from Wittmann (Westhofen Morstein) and Battenfeld-Spanier (Nieder-Flörsheim Frauenberg) were undoubtedly outstanding, especially in view of the difficult vintage context. In a well-known German wine guide, both were among the ten best dry Rieslings in the country. The 2013 Siefersheim Höllberg from Wagner-Stempel was also in very good shape. Nevertheless, the three Große Gewächse could not establish themselves in the top group in our tasting.
Of course, our selection of the “pirates” was not representative, and we would like to explicitly emphasise that our tasting should not be understood as a competition between the Moselle and Rhinehessen. However, our tasting showed that the dry Moselle Rieslings are not inferior to the top representatives of other growing regions. We expected that. All the more, however, we now ask ourselves even more urgently why the publications of the prevailing mainstream journalism still paint a distorted picture of the actual distribution of performance here.
Natural cork as a problem
After a phase of apparent quality improvements, problems with natural corks have been steadily increasing again for some years. In our tastings, a total of 13 bottles showed clear cork taint. Eight of them were from Amorim alone - a completely unacceptable rate. With three failures, the Trier cork industry occupies an inglorious second place. Unfortunately, we were not able to identify the cork manufacturer for all the bottles affected. Fortunately, only about half of the bottles were still sealed with natural corks. However, this results in a defect frequency that is clearly above five percent. If we assume that we occasionally failed to recognise cork-related impairments as such and falsely attributed them to the wine quality, we probably have to assume an even higher rate. In addition to clear cork taint and phenol loads, there is another problem: When uncorking even relatively young wines, we repeatedly had to struggle with brittle closures.

It was therefore not possible to observe the development of the wine in the glass over a longer period of time. We only accept samples of unfilled wines in exceptional cases, and then only if we can assume sufficient stability in the bottle for a period of at least three months. |
| ▲ | During our tasting, the wine showed conspicuous sensory characteristics. This does not necessarily have to be a wine fault. We categorise the quality and quantity of the abnormality and include it in the rating. Wine faults such as cork taint or an atypical ageing generally lead to a complete rejection. |
