For a long time, anyone looking for the best dry Rieslings in the world could hardly avoid the Wachau. Names like F. X. Pichler, Franz Hirtzberger or Emmerich Knoll filled the glossy pages of wine magazines for decades. Their Smaragd wines, grown on the steep slopes of the Danube valley between Melk and Krems, fetched top prices. They still do, but more than a few wineries in the region have recently complained about dwindling interest in their wines. The trend towards leaner wines seemed to be incompatible with the opulent, high-alcohol and often botrytised Rieslings and Grüne Veltliners produced here.

Steinfeder, Federspiel and Smaragd

The Vinea Wachau Nobilis Districtus (short: Vinea Wachau) was founded in 1983 as an association of Wachau vintners. Instead of the wine law predicates, its members use the designations Steinfeder (since 1984), Federspiel (since 1986) and Smaragd (since 1988, before: Honifogl) for their dry white wines. A Steinfeder has an alcohol content of no more than 11.5 %, a Federspiel no more than 12.5 % and a Smaragd no less than 12.5 %.

For many critics, a major cause of the excessive alcohol yield is the drip irrigation of the vineyards, which has been practised for a long time and leads to a shallow rooting depth of the vines and thus to higher sugar ripeness. The winegrowers counter that deep rooting of the plants is usually not possible on the stony subsoil due to the low soil cover. In addition, irrigation is absolutely necessary due to the lower average precipitation as a result of climate change.

The Wachau and its white wine tradition as victims of climate change? This idea cannot be completely dismissed. The fact is that in the Wachau, the average annual temperatures have been following a clear upward trend for more than 40 years and are now increasingly in a range above 10.5 °C, which is considered optimal for red wine rather than white wine production.

So the Wachau is a hopeless case? Not at all. For our tasting, we specifically searched for winemakers whose wines meet the contemporary desire of wine drinkers for leaner white wines. Here, however, the selection criterion was not so much the degree of alcohol – a Smaragd by definition has immutable a minimum alcohol content of 12.5 % – but rather the absence of botrytis. We actually see the Wachau in motion towards fully ripe, but no longer overripe grapes, and subsequently wines that are still powerful but by no means ponderous and overloaded.

In two blind tastings we examined 62 white wines from the Wachau, naturally mostly Rieslings and Grüner Veltliners, and were able to draw a predominantly positive conclusion. Different assessments of botrytis in very few wines caused one or the other controversial rating. Where young wines already showed a clear botrytis load, we downgraded them.

🯅The rating of the wine is based on a single taster. The taster is named in the context of the rating. The tasting was either open or blind. In case of a blind tasting, it is explicitly labelled as such.
🯅🯅The rating of the wine is based on two tasters. The tasters are named in the context of the rating. The tasting was carried out according to the four-eyes principle, in which both tasters agree on a joint rating.
🯅🯅🯅The rating is based on a tasting by our jury and indicates the Mean value calculated by us from the individual ratings of the tasters. Our mean value is based on the median.
⚖The wine was evaluated in a blind tasting. We have strict rules for blind tastings. The tasters do not receive any information that would allow them to identify the wines. The tasters are only given access to further information that goes beyond the subject matter if it is absolutely necessary for understanding the wines.
🕓We only had limited time to taste the wine  - typically during an open tasting event, such as a wine fair. It was therefore not possible to observe the development of the wine in the glass over a longer period of time. The informative value of our rating may therefore be limited under certain circumstances.
⛬The wine was tasted as a barrel sample or before an official test number (Amtliche Prüfungsnummer or Staatliche Prüfnummer) was issued. We only accept samples of unfilled wines in exceptional cases, and then only if we can assume sufficient stability in the bottle for a period of at least three months.
▲During our tasting, the wine showed conspicuous sensory characteristics. This does not necessarily have to be a wine fault. We categorise the quality and quantity of the abnormality and include it in the rating. Wine faults such as cork taint or an atypical ageing generally lead to a complete rejection.
