Bernkastel DoctorPhoto: weinfreaks.de
Bernkastel Doctor. The Bernkastel Doctor is considered the most expensive vineyard in Germany. In 1900, Julius Wegeler, co-owner of the Deinhard sparkling wine cellar, paid the proud price of 100 Goldmarks per vine for 43.22 ares. However, the purchase price also included wines still stored in the seller's cellar. How the Doctor got his name has not been clarified to this day. Numerous paintings and writings on the facades of houses in Bernkastel's old town refer to the elector of Trier, Boemund II, whom, according to legend, the wine from the Doctor cured of a serious illness in the 14th century. Because the doctors were unable to help the elector, he is said to have called the wine the “real Doctor”. However, the Doctor was first mentioned in a document in 1677. The Rieslings from the Doctor enjoy worldwide renown and always achieve high sales prices. The largest holdings in the steep slope are owned by the wineries Geheimrat J. Wegeler, Wwe. Dr. H. Thanisch – Erben Thanisch and Wwe. Dr. H. Thanisch – Erben Müller-Burggraef. There are two cellar vaults under the Doctor. One belongs to the Wegeler wineries, the other is shared by the two wineries, which were created in 1988 by division of the estate Wwe. Dr. H. Thanisch.
